It would be impossible to imagine 19th century music without the influence of Robert Schumann. Like Hector Berlioz, the effect of his works on other composers was considerable. Not only because of his gift for making even the simplest material powerful, but his ability to develop thematic ideas over the length of an entire work, which was also exceptional. Schumann was a master at creating purely musical programs based on his ideas, and this symphony is prime example of that.
The fourth symphony has steadily grown in popularity over the past century, and the present recording has played no small role in making that happen. Furtwäng
