Fetal MRI - Dr Elspeth Whitby

This session was delivered at Shine’s national conference for professionals - Spina Bifida: Pre-Conception to Adulthood - on Friday 3rd December 2021. The use of Fetal MRI has developed rapidly since the late 1990s, and the team at Sheffield have researched the additional information that can be gained compared with ultrasound alone, particularly when spina bifida or hydrocephalus is suspected or diagnosed. The additional information these scans provide can be used to inform parents-to-be and to help guide management decisions. Fetal MRI is part of the assessment process before prenatal surgery is offered, and can give additional information on brain development compared with ultrasound alone. More about Dr Elspeth Whitby: Dr Elspeth Whitby is a senior lecturer at the University of Sheffield and an Honorary consultant at Sheffield teaching hospitals NHS trust. Her areas of interest are based around obstetric imaging with MRI including the fetus, the placenta and post mortem imaging
