It was later incorporated into Christmas. In modern Ukrainian or Russian - Koliada/ Коляда - the meaning has shifted from Christmas itself to denoting the tradition of strolling, singing, mumming, and having fun on Christmas Eve. It specifically applies to children and teens who walk house to house greeting people, singing, and sifting grain that denotes the best wishes and receiving candy and small money in return. The action is called “Kolyadovannya“. Airat Ichmouratov is an award-winning Canadian composer, conductor, and klezmer clarinetist. He is a clarinetist of the internationally acclaimed, award-winning Klezmer group Kleztory and an invited professor at Laval University in Quebec, Canada.
