Americans’ Epiphany Bathing in Moscow

Have you heard about Epiphany bathing? Unlike in Western Christianity, the Orthodox commemorate Epiphany as the baptism of Jesus Christ in the Jordan River. So, in Eastern Europe the tradition is to dive into the water outside. Keep in mind that it’s winter and it’s Russia. So yes, it’s really cold! But why does nobody get sick? Russians believe that since the ice-cold water is blessed, it’s the holy spirit that not only protects you but metaphorically gives you a new birth. Watch these brave Americans taking a deep dive into Russian culture as they plunge into freezing cold water in Moscow. #americanexpat #orthodox #epiphany
