Emig was on a roll as he defeated Jeremy McGrath to win the 1996 Outdoor Motocross Championship and the 1997 Supercross Championship. Jeff Emig was at an all time high and rightly so. With McGrath struggling on his new Suzuki a new challenger appeared, John Dowd. Dowd was a great rider, winning a couple of races in the Outdoors before this season.
