Göschenen, at 3300 ft above sea level in Kanton Uri, is situated on the North side of the Gotthard tunnel, which is more than 9 miles long. The Gotthard route is an major transit route between the north and south of Europe. Many trains, freight and passengers, make use of this famous route across the Alps. The grade of 2,6% is especially severe for the freight trains, most of which are doubleheaded. Some even
