As one of the nation’s most progressive cities Portland, Oregon should be a paragon of care, consideration and concern for the homeless, and yet while there are certainly no shortage of the unhoused in Portland, that doesn’t mean the city is doing all it can to help folks living on the streets. And now Mayor Ted Wheeler has spearheaded an effort to pass a law that will criminalize “unauthorized camping.” And while the legislation includes the suggestion of additional housing and other less onerous provisions, the bottom line is that come 2024 being homeless in Portland will be illegal.
