DeBlanc led a group of F4F Wildcats over the Japanese-held Kolombangara island. The group was on an escort mission for a strike force of 12 Douglas SBD Dauntless dive bombers sent to attack Japanese shipping. DeBlanc reported that he had a serious fuel leak, and soon he and his wingman, Sgt. Jim Feliton had to leave the group and then to push into the battle against superior enemy forces: 2 American Wildcats vs 10 Nakajima Oscars.
