When the term industrial automation is used, you may wonder exactly what that means. While there can be many different terms for this, two of the primary terms that you may find are discrete or analog automation. In this lesson, I describe, in depth, what analog automation is and some of the industries it’s used in.
Using the word analog doesn’t necessarily mean that producing the product is done with primarily analog instrumentation. The definition is actually derived from the type of product that is produced. Analog automation products are typically things that are in continuous flow such as things that are treated and combined to produce something else.
While we discussed discrete automation as being a process that produces a quantifiable object, while analog may produce something that may be counted, such as a gallon of water, the process by which it’s created is what determines the automation type.
