Dontay “The Streets of San Francisco“ (1990, Bentley Records)
Initially down with MC Hammer, San Francisco’s Dontay embarked on his solo career in 1990 with the release of this single. Besides his previous Hammer affiliations (referenced in this video/song) Dontay’s image was further defined by both his love of going to the gym (he wears Gold’s Gym T-shirt in this video) and his love of riding his motorbike - not only as seen in this video but at his record release party for this single, that took place at SF’s Club Townsend (if memory serves right) he had his big heavy motorbike brought on stage as a prop. In addition to being a slice of forgotten Bay Area rap/hip-hop history this video, shot on location all over SF, is also a time capsule of The City of San Francisco 32 years ago. Upon locating the HipHopSlam interview from this time period with Dontay we will digitize and publish here. We also have another (shorter) video clip by Dontay that is even rarer than this one that will be posted here soon.
