The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) is a network of roads, railways and pipelines spanning about 3,000 km
It enters Pakistan from Kashgar in the northwestern Chinese region of Xinjiang and joins the Arabian Sea via Gwadar, giving Chinese products access to the Middle East, Africa and beyond. This includes upgrading the 1,300km Karakoram Highway.
Transit projects from the Chinese border to the Arabian Sea began in the 1950s. Construction of the Karakoram Highway began in 1959. Later more projects were connected to this road. Construction of Gwadar Port started in 2002 and was completed in 2006. After that, due to political instability in Pakistan and increasing incidents of terrorism in the country, the expansion work of Gwadar port was temporarily stopped.
