History
SWORDFIGHT is a game that was developed for the Atari 2600 console. The game was designed by Stephen Tatsumi, a member of the Blue Sky Rangers, a group of video game programmers at Mattel Electronics. Despite its completion, the game was never released during the heyday of the Atari 2600. The reasons for this were multifaceted: it required two players, it wasn’t based on a famous movie or arcade game, and there was no Intellivision version. However, in the year 2000, Intellivision Productions produced a limited number of professionally made cartridges. This marked the first time this lost classic was made available to the public.
Scenario
In SWORDFIGHT, two knights face each other at the edge of the universe. Each knight wields a laser sword, ready to engage in a battle to the death. The game was inspired by Tatsumi’s dissatisfaction with another Atari swordfighting game, where the characters were too small for the player to get a feel of the combat.
