The Saga of Rex - Short Clip - May 2023 - Michel Gagne Animation

As some of you may know, since the start of 2013, I’ve been single-handedly animating a feature film, based on my graphic novel, The Saga of Rex, published in 2010 by Image Comics. The idea of the feature started with a successful Kickstarter and grew from there. The first few years following the Kickstarter were spent working out the story and making sure the film was going to have some depth to it and not be just an animation showcase. Once that was done, I did an animatic of the entire film, which I completed by July 2018. Since then, I have managed to completely animate, clean-up and inbetween 73% of the film. It would be very remiss of me if I didn’t mention my beloved friend Seung Kim & his two daughters, for their generous and precious help on the inbetweens. When I did the Kickstarter, I tried using digital auto-inbetweening on some of the animation because of the time-consuming nature of drawing all the inbetweens by hand. I quickly realized that if I did 100% of the film by myself including all the inbetweens, I would never get done. Although the results were passable, it gave the animation a more mechanical look that did not fully satisfy me. Thanks to Seung and his dedication to the project, I was able to revert to my initial idea of making the film completely old school with hand drawn inbetweens. The remaining 27% of the film is still in its rough animatic form, but I’m making progress on a daily basis to reduce that number to zero and get the entire film finished. Realistically, I’m still a couple of years from completion, but I swear I will never give up. In the meantime, here’s a very short clip from the work-in-progress. Please don’t blink!
