Septimius Severus was the first Roman emperor from Africa. He was proud of his African heritage and is said to have spoken Latin with a North African accent. He also encouraged the development of North African cities, including his hometown of Leptis Magna, which he made into a thriving metropolis.
Septimius Severus was a Roman emperor who ruled from 193 to 211 AD. He was born in Leptis Magna, in modern-day Libya, on April 11, 145 AD, to a family of equestrian rank. He came to power after a period of political instability known as the Year of the Five Emperors.
Emperor Severus was known for his military campaigns and expansion of the Roman Empire. In 197 AD, he led a successful campaign against the Parthian Empire, which had been a longstanding enemy of Rome. He also led campaigns against rebellious tribes in North Africa, and Britain.
During his reign, Septimius Severus instituted several reforms, including increasing the pay of the army, reorganizing the government, and granting Roman citizenship to many residents of the empire. He also built several public works, including a triumphal arch in Rome and a new aqueduct.
Severus was married to Julia Domna, who was from a wealthy Syrian family. They had two sons, Caracalla and Geta, who would eventually succeed him as co-emperors. However, their relationship was strained, and after Severus’s death, Caracalla had his brother killed and ruled as the sole emperor.
Septimius Severus died in Eboracum (modern-day York) in Britain on February 4, 211 AD, while on a military campaign against the Caledonian tribes. He was buried in Rome, where his triumphal arch still stands today. His reign marked the beginning of the Severan dynasty, which would rule Rome until 235 AD.
