Bristronica 24: Landscape Ferris – A Magnetic String Resonator
We caught up with Eric from Landscape at Bristronica 2024, who introduced us to the *Ferris*, a fascinating new musical device. Developed in collaboration with artist Victoria Shen, also known by her moniker Eviction, Ferris is described as a polyphonic magnetic spinning string resonator.
This intriguing product utilizes a spinning magnetic disc to strum instruments with steel strings, such as guitars, basses, and pianos. The speed of the disc can be adjusted using a thumb wheel, a button, or via CV, broadening the potential for unique soundscapes. Eric demonstrated the Ferris using a psaltery, revealing its ability to evoke a reverbed, ghostly effect and generate rich harmonic drones. The product is already available, with a retail price of $190, and further orders are expected to open on November 10th. Shen’s inventive contributions, including her piezo hairbrush, further highlight the creative potential behind this collaboration.
