The Holodomor - Stalin’s Famine

The Holodomor is the name given to a famine in Ukraine in the 1930s, caused by Stalin’s collectivisation and ideological desires to destroy the richer peasants. Its estimated 3.5 to 12 million died as a result of starvation and execution. In this video we will go through what it took to survive one of the worst famines of the 20th Century. From tales of children enduring horrific hunger to the requisition brigades who pillaged the countryside to meet quotas, the stories of the Holodomor are not for the faint hearted. We will look at the causes, how the famine was made worse and how people managed to survive, with sometimes drastic action. Please note this video deals with themes of cannibalism.
