King Yellowman ~ Body Move, 65th Earthstrong 2021

Please share King Yellow, forty years and still going strong - respect is due. King Yellowman is one of the most popular reggae artists to have come from Jamaica. He came into this world as Winston Foster on 15 January 1956, in the nation’s capital. However, as an albino his unenviable childhood led to him being taken into the care of the Alpha Boy’s School, famed for the good works of the sisters of mercy led by Sister Mary Ignatius Davies. The school had nurtured such legends as Tommy McCook, Don Drummond, Johnny `Dizzy’ Moore, Rico Rodriguez and Leroy Smart to name a few. He built his early career around this encumbrance and the crowds loved him for his diffident absurdities performed with clever lyricism. His early victory in the annual Tastee Talent Show led to critical acclaim and within a matter of months became a headlining act. His recording sessions led to a series of witty and relevant hits with more than a hint of slackness. He initially recorded with Joseph Hoo Kim, Joe Gibbs and Lloyd Campbell before he joined Henry Junjo Lawes who licensed his works to Greensleeves which led to international notoriety. Following Bob Marley’s death in 1981 Yellowman proved a particularly popular contender for the Jamaican crown with the dancehall style proving more popular than roots and culture tunes. He toured extensively and his success led to a recording contract with CBS who released the crossover album `King Yellowman’. Sadly his major signing resulted in a demand for international appeal and his popularity subsequently waned although his association with the majors proved short lived. He returned in fine style with a series of albums and constant touring. In the early 90s he fought and won a bout with skin cancer leading to invasive surgery on his jaw bone. He is still held in high esteem and recorded with his daughter K’reema a suitable celebration of father’s day and the following is a list of just some of his albums that demonstrate his popularity!
