Prominent pro-Kurdish lawyer shot dead in Turkey

Tahir Elci, the President of the Diyarbakir Bar Association and a prominent pro-Kurdish attorney, was shot and killed in the predominantly Kurdish city of Diyarbakir. The lawyer was shot by gunmen who opened fire at security forces from a car in the southeastern district of Sur, said the interior minister, Efkan Ala. No group immediately claimed responsibility, and there were conflicting reports on whether this was an assassination attempt or if he was killed in the crossfire.
