The crane has long been recognized as a symbol of spring. It returns to Sweden in march, as winter draws to a close and the days get longer.
Thousands of birds gather at Trandansen at the southern edge of Lake Hornborga between march and april.
This is where a large part of Sweden’s cranes come to eat grains, rest, find a suitable partner and dance. The dance itself is probably a way to strengthen ties between the pairs.
The dance may involve courtship of the partner or represent an introduction to mating.
