In today’s episode, we leave the gently aromatic corridors of Havana, with their seemingly ever-present scent of freshly rolled tobacco leaves, to visit the Cuba’s famous tobacco fields where the region’s fertile soil, high humidity, and abundant sunshine create the ideal growing conditions for tobacco, allowing the leaves to develop their renowned full flavor and beautiful aromas which have made Habanos cigars the best in the world. First, we step into the verdant landscape of San Juan e Martinez, a name synonymous with the finest tobacco fields in the world, where we have the honor of visiting Raul Cruz Rodriguez, a local farmer whose family has been cultivating sungown tobacco in Vuelta Abajo for generations. We witness firsthand the incredible passion of simple farmers like Raul who have dedicated their lives to the cultivation of this sacred crop. We next travel to Tobacco Experimental Station in San Martin where dedicated scientists utilize cutting-edge technologies to ensure that Cuba’s famous, and economically important, tobacco is able to withstand the challenges of the 21st century. And, finally, we end in shade grown tobacco fields of Partido to explore the shade grown tobacco fields which specialize in cultivating the pristine wrapper leaves that grace each Habanos cigar.
