Derina Harvey Band - Spancil Hill

Please enjoy our version of Michael Considine’s “Spancil Hill“. SPANCIL HILL Last night as I lay dreamin’ Of pleasant days gone by Me mind bein’ bent on rambelin’ To Ireland’s isle did fly I stepped on board a vision And followed with her will ’Til I shortly came to anchor At the cross near Spancil Hill Delighted by the novelty Enchanted with the scene When in my early days Where often I had been I thought I heard a murmur And think I hear it still It’s the little stream of water That flows down Spancil Hill It being the 23rd of June The day before the fair Where Ireland’s sons and daughters Were all assembled there The young, the old, the brave and the bold Their duty to fulfil, At the little church in Clooney, A mile from Spancil Hill I went to see my neighbours To hear what they might say The old ones they were dead and gone The young ones turning grey I met with Taylor Quigley He’s as bold as ever still Sure he used to mend my clothing When I lived in Spancil Hill I paid a flying visit To my first and only love he’s fine as any man can be And gentle as a dove I threw my arms around him And said “Johnny I love you still“ He married the Ranger’s daughter, The pride of Spancil Hill I dreamt I stooped and kissed him As in the day of ’ore He said you’re only joking As manys a time before The cock crew in the mornin’ It crew both loud and shrill And I woke in California Many miles from Spancil Hill ____________________________ Led by their fearless front-woman Derina Harvey, this five-piece Celtic-rock group offers a fresh take on traditional tunes and intersperse that offering with their own original jigs and reels. Their infectious rhythmic undertow is layered with rock guitar, dizzying fiddle motifs, and topped by Derina’s powerful voice. These transplanted east-coasters have earned a reputation with their high-energy live show, leaving many an audience out-of-breath and hollering from the dance floor! The band has proven to be a crowd-pleaser wherever they go. Though the band is based in Alberta, 2015 has seen the group travel across the country, with three trips to Newfoundland to their credit where they have entertained crowds at theatres, festivals, and pubs. They have been featured twice on the main stage of George Street Festival in St. John’s, once opening for NL favourites Shanneyganock. Most recently, they have shared the stage with other east-coast favourites such as Jimmy Rankin, The Irish Descendents, Pogey, and even some rock acts including The Trews, Kim Mitchell, and Trooper. The band continues to build on a growing fan base by promoting their self-titled debut album (released in 2013). The record has garnered radio airplay in multiple regions in Canada (CKUA in Edmonton; K-Rock and Radio Newfoundland in St. John’s, NL; CBC, Canada-wide). Their second album entitled “Rove and Go“ (released May, 2016) has already gotten airplay on over 30 community and college radio stations across Canada.
