The Railway opened up travel opporunities for many in the early nineteenth century. Travel at Christmas being one of them! Until the modern idea of Christmas had been pretty much invented from scratch by Charles Dickens or Harriet Martineau, Christmas was not so big a ’deal’ as it is now - certainly not as commercialised. This meant travel up to and on Christmas Day itself was a pretty ordinary occurance - other than the trails enabled far more people to travel... with often predictable results!
