Greece: Violent clashes hit Athens on anniv of Alexis Grigoropoulos killing

The clashes erupted following a demonstration to commemorate the death of Alexis Grigoropoulos who was killed on December 6 in 2008 by police. Grigoropoulos was killed by police who were involved in an argument with a group of teenagers in central Athens’ Exarchia district. Two officers were found guilty of murder and of acting as an accomplice respectively. Grigoropoulos’s death resulted in large protests throughout Greece, and solidarity demonstrations around the world. His death is marked every year in several cities across the country, often resulting in violent clashes.
