Some narcissists devalue and discard their partners during a pregnancy or shortly after childbirth. What gives? A pregnant female is an autonomous, agentic woman. This challenges and undermines the inert and malleable internal object that represents her in the narcissist’s mind (her “snapshot“ or introject). The narcissist reacts with separation insecurity (abandonment anxiety) to this divergence. He is humiliated at his exposed dependence and helplessness.
