We tend to think of disasters as inevitable - but often Mother Nature gives us vital clues which we foolishly ignore or overlook. This episode will take a close look at avalanches and what we can learn about how, where, and why they strike.
Catastrophic avalanches occur when huge slabs of snow break away from a mountain slope and roar downhill. These moving masses of snow and ice can reach speeds of more than 130 kilometres per hour within a matter of seconds. Any victims caught in such horrific events are hurled down the mountainside and buried alive. Most do not survive.
In this episode, we’ll look at two of the most terrifying avalanches in recent history; The Mount Everest Avalanches of 2015, which killed an estimated twenty-five climbers on the mountain, as well as bringing damage and injury to roughly 360 people at the base camp below.
