The lowlights from Sony’s press conference at E3 2006.
Original video:
It’s been more than 10 years since Sony’s legendary mess up in the form of their 2006 E3 press conference, which many still remember to this day. The video that propelled this otherwise subpar conference into infamy was Matt Cox’s classic “Sony’s Embarrassing E3 2006 Press Conference“, which highlighted how lackluster the PS3 was near launch and how it wasn’t the revolutionary console which Sony claimed it to be. The video, too, is more than 10 years old, and while it is still amusing as a gaming history piece, the actual video quality is obviously dated and representative of the time. YouTube wasn’t even a year old when the video got released, and it shows with a very low bit rate and a measly 240p resolution. The message got across fine, but today it’s more of a relic rather than a source quality version representation of the PS3’s capabilities and how they weren’t very impressive.
Until now.
As a celebration of this now decade old event, and as a way to hype up E3 2016, I’ve decided to create an almost perfect, near 1:1 recreation on Matt Cox’s original video, with a large boost in video quality (HD) and 60fps. Outside of (very) minor frame differences, the only other visible change is a switch in a camera angle at 2:00, which is due to the source quality archive of the Sony press conference provided by the amazing Giant Bomb, as you can see here:
Everything is else is kept in tact.
If you watch the whole press conference as is, it is pretty lackluster and fairly boring. It doesn’t have the flash and razzmatazz as more recent E3 conferences, which is why it’s amazing just how well Cox was able to represent the conference in a whole other light, even back when video game criticism on YouTube was hardly a thing. In my eyes, it’s a classic video with impeccable timing and a biting sense of humor, which inspired many others to make “E3 fails“ videos for years to come.
So enjoy this new, pristine version of Sony’s Embarrassing E3 2006 Press Conference in the best quality possible and reflect on how far Sony has come since the failure that was the PS3’s launch.
