Behind The Scenes: Royal Albatross Hatching Highlights From The Incubator | DOC | Cornell Lab
Watch the slow progression of a Royal Albatross hatching in the incubator over several days in these behind-the-scenes highlights from the New Zealand Department of Conservation.
Each Royal Albatross chick is transported to an incubator during its multi-day hatching process. Why the incubator? This conservation measure keeps chicks safe from “flystrike“—when flies lay maggots on the chick and hatching egg—which can be fatal to a hatchling. Once a chick finishes hatching, it is returned to the care of its parent at the nest.
