Teochew, another Minnan language - Oung-Heng HENG | PG 2019

Teochew is a Sinitic language of the Minnan subfamily which also includes Taiwanese. This is a short introduction to the language and it includes phonology and vocabulary comparisons with Mandarin, Japanese and Korean. The talk will be part in Teochew with English subtitle and part in English. Oung-Heng Heng is a language enthusiast who was brought up speaking Teochew at home. Although he speaks better French than Teochew, hearing the sounds of this language in Paris’ Chinatown or when on travel in . Asia feels like home. He has been building up knowledge about Teochew since college at a time when he was discussing the language with people around the globe, from Auckland to Shantou, Paris, New York and San Francisco. He would like to open a small window into his culture. When he was a child, his parents were always telling him that a good handwriting is essential to a well educated person so he taught himself calligraphy, and it became a hobby.
