In the 8th class of my “from concept to reality“ course at McGill University - Desautels Faculty of Management, I look at Strategy, Competition, Innovation & Disruption. Considering my vantage point building WatchMojo, we zoomed in on a case study in the streaming wars, namely the AVOD and SVOD winners YouTube and Netflix.
Concluding that even the “disrupters get disrupted,“ the irony that within a decade, both went from challengers, to incumbents, to targets of disruption with assaults by Meta’s Facebook Watch, TikTok, Snap Inc. in YouTube’s case and of course, in Netflix’s case: The Walt Disney Company’s Disney , WarnerMedia’s HBOMax, ViacomCBS’s Paramount, Amazon’s Prime - all within a decade, when you think about it!
