HKBU discovers new species of jellyfish in Hong Kong

An HKBU-led team has discovered a new species of box jellyfish in a shrimp pond at the Hong Kong Mai Po Nature Reserve. The jellyfish named “Tripedalia maipoensis“ belongs to the Tripedaliidae family of the class Cubozoa. It has a cube-shaped body with three tentacles at the base of each of its four corners. The discovery, which increases the number of known species in the Tripedaliidae family from three to four, highlights the potential for more marine life discovery in the Hong Kong and even the Chinese coastal waters.
