Jeffrey Gurakpuy from Goulburn Island, yirdaki & mago wiz!

In our ever expanding effort to uncover new talent as well as to bring wider recognition to established artists, it is iDIDJ Australia’s pleasure to present Jeffrey Gurakpuy in another first for the internet and YouTube. Gurakpuy is a multi-talented musician who grew up on Goulburn Island and has also stayed for a length of time at Maningrida community. He has been a member of several Indigenous fusion bands and has also performed in traditional dance groups here in Australia and overseas. He formed his own Malirri Band and was a member of Mosquito Band on Goulburn Island, and has also played for the legendary band Coloured Stone, Maningrida’s exciting and soulful Letterstick Band, and Milingimbi’s Wirrinyga Band. For a period of time, he was also a member of the Elcho Island Dancers which performed on contract in Katherine township for tourists. When asked about his most memorable moments, Gurakpuy says that one of his biggest gigs was opening the Lucky Dube concert with Letters
