DANTE’S PURGATORIO | Purgatory, sin and punishment.

Purgatorio is the second part of Dante Alighieri’s 14th-century epic poem Divine Comedy. It is a narrative of Dante’s journey through the afterlife, specifically through the realms of Ante-Purgatory and Purgatory proper, where souls who have repented their sins but have not yet been purified are punished. The poem is a continuation of the story that began in Inferno, where Dante traveled through the nine circles of Hell, guided by the Roman poet Virgil. Purgatory is divided into terraces, each corresponding to a specific sin. The souls on these terraces are punished by suitable means and as they complete their punishment, they ascend to the next terrace and closer to Heaven.
