The Palatine Chapel - the royal chapel of the Norman Palace in Palermo, Sicily - Italy 🇮🇹

Our second part of our Sicilian trip begins at the Norman Palace where the undoubted highlight is the Royal Chapel. The Palatine Chapel (Cappella Palatina) is part of the Norman heritage listed by Unesco as a World Heritage site. It was begun by King Roger II in 1130 and completed about 20 years later in the reign of his successor King William. Walking into this magnificent jewel simply takes one`s breath away. The walls and dome are covered with stunningly beautiful mosaics created by Byzantine/Greek architects while the ceiling itself is very much in the Arab/Fatimid style. The coming together of these three cultures, Norman, Greek and Arab, has led to the creation of a true wonder. We felt priveliged to be able to stand and gaze upon such a stunning place. #Palatinechapel #sicilia #sicily #palermo #capellapalatina #normans #worldheritagesite #italy royalpalacesicily #palazzorealepalermo #kingrogerthesecondsicily#kingwilliamsicily #ruggeroredisicilia#guglielmoredisicilia #fatimid #byzantine #greek
