This video shows a demonstration of a hybrid soft-rigid robotic arm created at the Assistive Robotics Lab at Virginia Tech. The robotic arm is pneumatic, and can lift a payload of 1.3 kg (2.9 pounds). The design and control of the arm are described in the paper “Design and Characterization of a Modular Hybrid Continuum Robotic Manipulator“ by Hee Doo Yang and Alan T. Asbeck in IEEE/ASME Transactions on Mechatronics 25 (6), 2812-2823, 2020. The robot was fabricated with a layered manufacturing process developed by our lab.
