Othello is a Moor who has married a young Venetian gentlewoman named Desdemona. He’s assigned to fight against a Turkish invasion of Cyprus where he is joined during the battle by his faithful lieutenant, Cassio. But when Othello finally arrives at Cyprus, the Turkish fleet has been wrecked by a storm, and so he leads the people of Cyprus in a celebration. Iago, another of Othello’s trusted companions, grows jealous of Othello’s prosperous life as well as of Cassio’s position, seeking it for himself. Iago plans to ruin both men by planting suspicions of Desdemona’s infidelity with Cassio and when Othello takes the bait, he devises a plan of his own which involves taking revenge on those who have wronged him.
