The backdrop of most of Biswajit’s current work that featured in his exhibition Celestial Canvas, is black, evoking the endless darkness of outer-space and the universe. Much in the manner of action painters like Pollock, he streaks paint down this midnight black canvas. Red, gold, brown and silver colours, run down the canvas…tracing their own path in a spontaneous cascade that breaks the monotone of black. Amidst this profusion of dripping colours, a flight of butterflies populates the canvas. The butterfly is a symbol of hope, resurrection and change according to Christian theology. In Hinduism, the butterfly is a symbol of rebirth. Just like the caterpillar’s metamorphosis into a butterfly, death doesn’t end our existence, but frees us to pursue even greater development. Building upon these pre-existing symbolisms, Biswajit has added his own secrets that are inscribed on their wings, mathematical calculations and personal stories that reveal themselves upon closer inspection.
