Ninety-Nine Novels: Saturday Night & Sunday Morning by Alan Sillitoe

The list is typically idiosyncratic, and shows the breadth of Burgess’s interest in fiction. The novel follows Arthur Seaton, a rebellious young factory worker who works all week so he can spend the weekends drinking a fraternising with married women. Sillitoe’s writing celebrates the working-class spirit of Arthur, and is a vital, alive depiction of the Nottingham streets in which he lives.
Alan Sillitoe was born in Nottingham in 1928. He took up writing, living in France and Spain where he began writing Saturday Night and Sunday Morning and The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner. He died in 2010 after
