Biber Passacaglia in G Minor “Guardian Angel“: Gabrielle Wunsch, baroque violin
The Passacaglia in G Minor for unaccompanied violin by Heinrich Ignaz Franz von Biber, performed on the baroque violin by Gabrielle Wunsch. HD video from our January, 2014, concerts.
Biber’s passacaglia is one of the finest works for violin of the 17th century: Biber spins a dazzling array of variations--in many different affects--over a simple, four-note bass line. The passacaglia is the crown jewel of the collection of sonatas known as the Rosary Sonatas; these works come down to us from the single surviving copy in Munich.
This video is part of our free, digital library of Early Music videos, and is released as part of our 2016 celebration of 20,000,000 views worldwide. To help support this important work, please consider a tax-deductible donation or sponsor a recording project. With your help, anything is possible!
Gabrielle Wunsch maintains an active schedule both here and in Europe, performing with Voices of Music, Philharmonia Baroque, Musica Angelica, B’Rock, and Nieuwe Philharmonie Utrecht. She has been a member of the Festspiel Orchester of the Göttingen Händel-Festspiele since 2006. Gabrielle holds degrees from Eastman School of Music (BM) and SUNY Stony Brook (MM), as well as in baroque violin from the Royal Conservatory of the Hague (BM and MM).
