On November 29, 2023 surrealist blues aja monet made her debut on the #jazzisdead stage performing her Grammy nominated album, when the poems do what they do. This night was medicinal - a powerful performance packed with moments of grieving, joy, love, strength and resilience. Watch here as monet performs ’the devil you know’ joined on stage by trumpeter Chief Xian aTunde Adjuah, flautist Elena Pinderhughes, drummer Justin Brown, pianist Javier Santiago, bassist Jermaine Paul, percussionist Magatte Sow, and saxophonist Logan Richardson. The performance is dedicated to activist Michael Latt, a dear friend of aja who was killed days before the performance. The Latt family has established the Michael Latt Legacy Fund to celebrate his legacy of social and cultural impact supporting artists from underrepresented communities.
