VCU Jazz Orchestra I with Kurt Rosenwinkel: Turn Out The Stars VCU Jazz was fortunate to host guest guitarist/composer Kurt Rosenwinkel in a virtual multi-day residency in which he presented masterclasses, taught lessons, and (as noted in the May 2021 edition of Down Beat) collaborated with our student ensembles via several multitracked performances then aired within our concerts. This beautiful ballad “Turn Out The Stars“ was composed by the pianist Bill Evans and arranged by the pianist Shelly Berg. But Shelly’s arrangement is for horns and bass only, chorale-style: I decided to insert into the middle of it an opportunity for our rhythm section and guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel.
