Produced for Richfield Oil Corp. (now part of ARCO) by Alfred Higgins Productions, “Baja Holiday“ is a color travelogue film about the marlin fishing opportunities offered in Baja, Mexico. It was filmed by Alfred Higgins and William Clark with a script by Eric Strutt. This film was released in 1961.
Opening: Richfield presents Baja Holiday (:08-:48). A marlin jumps up from the water. Airplanes on the tarmac at LAX (Los Angeles International Airport). Two men, in suits, point at planes and talk with one another at the airport. A jumbo jet lands at LAX. The men shake hands with another man who has just landed. The three men take a plane south of the border (:49-2:03). Three men talk onboard a plane. Snow capped mountains of California give way to the warm sight of Mexico. Plane lands on an airstrip at Palmilla, Los Cabos. The men are driven to a resort in Baja, California, they have their luggage and fishing poles. Beautiful blue waters of Baja. Men survey their gear for fishing. Waves crash against rocks at night (2:04-3:33). Sun rise. The men get into a car. Men get into their boat and head for sea. Across the water, the men rig their bait and set up their fishing poles. Captain uses wire to steer the boat. A dark fin in the water. A man reels in a fish, a giant marlin. The man keep reeling in the large fish, the boat rocks, the fish fights. The marlin seems to skip across the top of the waves (3:34-6:04). The marlin flies into the air and struggles as the battle between the marlin and the man continues. The man reels in the marlin, but cuts the wire and lets him go. Another of the men takes a photo of the fish. The men put sunblock on. A marlin jumps in the water, another of the men has hooked the fish. The man reels in the fish which continues to fight and jump. A seagull gets close and almost gets speared by the marlin (6:05-8:26). The man deals with the marlin for almost an hour as the two engage in battle. The marlin is reeled in and cut loose. The boat heads for the beach. The men relax in chairs and listen to Mexican men play guitars under the sun outside near the beach (8:27-10:03). Lots of people and workers stop and listen to the men sing and play guitars (10:04-11:15). The men flip coins to decide on what to do. Two men back into the water with scuba gear. Under the sea: corral, fish, and rocks. A starfish lays there. Other fish swim about. A tiny stingray. The water is very clear. A larger stingray swims. Two of the men exit the water. A beautiful sunset (11:16-13:24). Female cooks in the kitchen prepare dinner. The three men sit at a table, men play guitars, and women serve the food. The Mexican troubadours play their guitars and sing during dinner. Women serve giant plates of meat and vegetables. Couples sit and listen as well (13:25-15:03). Men walk out and pay their respects to the statue of Neptune by the sea. Waves crash near them. Two of the men miss the water with coins but the third gets his peso into the water for good luck (15:04-16:00). Early morning sun rise. Boat at sea. The men are back in their fishing boat. Calm seas. One of the men hooks a rooster fish and they keep it. A Sierra Mackerel is hooked next. The Captain steers with his foot. A fin cuts through the water. A man hooks a marlin and the battle between marlin and a man continues. The marlin bucks and spins on top of the water (16:01-18:02). Finally the marlin is brought to the side but they cut him loose. A sea turtle is caught, brought in for dinner. A sailfish gets hooked and there is a battle again between man’s reel and the fish. The sailfish spins and twists. The reel war continues. Man pulls in, sailfish gets near the side of the boat. The wire is cut and the fish is free (18:03-20:31). Mexican men play guitars near the water. The men turn in for bed, they are tired after a day of fishing. Marlin visions, sailfish as well. All three men dream of fishing (20:32-21:45).
