AETHYRIEN - Varðlokkur, Caller of Spirits

A lot of mystery surrounds Varðlokkur, seiðr and the Völva performing it all. While much of the songs and chants have been lost to the ages, the idea behind it all still remains. The Völva, a seeress or witch of sorts, would use a form of old Norse magic called seiðr to enter the spirit realm. In a state of vulnerability, she would be able to gain knowledge communicating with other spirits, influence the threads of fate woven by the Norns, read omens and speak of prophecy. The Varðlokkur, or the chanted song, is thought to have had no words but instead melodies. Once in this trance, she needed to be protected and would often rely on a virgin woman to assist her. Once the ritual is complete, her nearly lifeless body would require a healing ceremony to help nurture her back to reality and health. Fun fact: The term “warlock“ originates from the old Norse word Varðlokkur. :) This song is dedicated to the women who carry the heathen and pagan torch, who instill magic within all of us, imbuing us with inspiration and enlightenment.
