Jean-Henri Ravina (1818-1906) was a French pianist and composer born in Bordeaux. He entered the Paris Conservatory in 1831 and studied under . Zimmerman and A.F. Laurent. There he received the second prize for piano in 1832 and the first in 1834. He also won the first prize for harmony and accompaniment in 1835. After teaching at the Conservatory for a few years, he devoted himself to his career as a concert pianist. He was made a Chevalier of the Legion of Honor in 1861.
This set of etudes (Op.1) was dedicated to Ravina’s teacher Zimmerman.
