Although this cue plays in every town on Terra in the final game, it was originally composed for the game “Planet’s Edge“ (and it is in fact used in that game too for two medieval-like locations). In Might and Magic III, it replaces “Adventuring in Towns & Castles“, which was originally composed to play in both every town and castle.
Note by Tim Tully to Todd Hendrix: “The castanets should really be a tambourine, but the MT32 doesn’t have one.“ (The MT-32 actually does have a tambourine amongst the percussion instruments. But the game designers restricted Tim from using the percussion channel 10 entirely, so the castanets (which was separate from the normal percussion track) were used instead.)
There is a small note here to Tim Tully which may be referencing this track, “liked especially: ... midie“:
Three versions of this track are presented here:
A - original version with “Tambourine“ restored
B - “Tambourine“ replaced with “Castanets“; “Melodic Tom“ replaced with “Electric Percussion 1“ (the Castanets were used because being restricted by the game designers from using the percussion channel 10 this was the closest, and the Melodic Tom was replaced by the sound programmer after the Castanet version was submitted)
C - same changes as B, but using the actual game mix (all note velocities stripped and set to 127)

The FM version is what most people heard when they originally played the game. The MT-32 version is how the tracks were originally composed, while FM is a revised version for lower-grade soundcards with less channels and instrument selection. But due to a programming error in the game’s .M music format, the notation of every single song of every music version in the final game has been lowered by 2 semitones. The FM version (having been made from the original MT-32 versions, and being unable to be altered) has retained this 2 semitone lowering for the soundtrack, while all of the MT-32 versions play at their original tone as composed even though they would be lowered by two semitones in the final game.
FM version recorded and donated exclusively for XeenMusic by “cyclone3d“ using an authentic “Media Vision Pro Audio Spectrum (8-bit)“ equipped with real OPL2. Selected soundcard option in game was “Adlib“.
