[Harpsichord Advent Calendar - Un jour Un clavecin] - Mathias Griewisch 2022. (14/24)

The harpsichord of the day arrived at the Schola Cantorum only a few days ago. It is a chromatic harpsichord, built by Mathias Griewisch on a model described by Michael Praetorius in 1618. It is possible to play not 12, but 19 keys per octave, which makes it possible to distinguish for example B# from C, or Gb from F#. The piece by Maione that I have chosen was written for the chromatic harpsichord: it does not explore the enharmonic dimension, so it does not highlight the difference between, for example, a solb and an F#, but the central part of the piece modulates very far in the sharp keys, and it is exceptional to have such modulations while keeping a great purity in the tuning of the intervals. -- Le clavecin du jour est arrivé à la Schola Cantorum il y a seulement quelques jours.
