Rhythmic Gymnastics was first recognized as a separate discipline by the International Gymnastics Federations (FIG) in 1963. Still, it was not hard to find the elements that originated the discipline within the sport of Gymnastics many years earlier, even at the Olympic Games. The Helsinki 1952 Games were a great example the evolution of the sport, which later developed into a separate discipline, as the Soviet Union presented its team routine. With hoops and including influences from its well known Russian ballet, the Soviet women’s team won Olympic gold, followed by Hungary (silver) and Czechoslovakia (bronze). Rhythmic Gymnastics would later join the Olympic programme as a separate discipline at the Los Angeles 1984 Olympic Games with the individual event. It was Canada’s Lori Fung who won the inaugural gold medal.
