This large single cell is a ciliate in the genus Stentor. It’s a filter feeder that can freely swim, or latch to substrate and stretch out. This cell is full of numerous ingested algae. The DIC microscopy here reveals the ciliary rows and individual cilia which is how this creature moves. Collected from a freshwater Florida pond and viewed under 400X DIC.
