Lt Giorgio Farotti and his men of the Decima Mas San Marco regiment were tasked with covering their retreat. But their Commander, Prince Junio Valerio Borghese, had other plans for them. San Marco rgt was made up by the Barbarigo, the Lupo and the NP battalions and was the bulk of the combat group that was supposed to reach Trieste and defend it from Tito’s army in April 1945.
