Winnipeg General Strike 2013

Standing at the corner of Portage and Main in downtown Winnipeg, I think back to May 15, 1919. At 7 a.m. 500 telephone operators (90% women) finished their shift and left. No one came to replace them. Other workers left their worksites (factories, offices, shops,..) and all gathered at 11 a.m. at the corner of Portage and Main. By the end of the day over 25,000 workers had joined the Winnipeg General Strike and shut down the city.
