Alex Dalgarno 00:00 2. Three 06:11 3. Rien à voler 12:32 Yakhchal is the Farsi name for an ancient Persian icebox with a domed shape that resembles a sacred temple. It’s also an instrumental post-rock trio from Brussels. With bass, guitar and drums, the band plays danceable, melancholic sounds, repetitive loops that evolve into explosive riffs. In February 2024, Yakhchal released the new EP “Beggars and Comets”, with three dynamic, dreamy tracks recorded by Tom Stadnicki (Phoenician Drive, Partikul). Artwork by Italian artist Niccolo Masini, who already produced the cover of first Yakhchal EP’s “Asterism“. The opening song, “Alex Dalgarno”, starts with a speech by the British physicist quoting Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar. The sentence “When beggars die, there are no comets seen; the heavens themselves blaze forth the death of princes” gives the title to the EP. The second song “Three” leaves metaphorically the sky for more urban surroundings. Three beggars wander through the city, move throughout the factories, until they reach the sea as the sun sets. The psychedelic ending of the song emphasizes the still power of nature against the frantic and harmful actions of humans. “Rien a Voler” closes the 20-minute EP with a slow drum and bass beat that evolves in a more upbeat melody, and ends up in an explosion of distorted guitars. There is hope for beggars to find a shelter for the night before continuing their trip. Since 2018, the trio has performed regularly in Belgium and elsewhere.
